May is Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage (AAPI) Month, a month to recognize and honor the history, culture, contributions, and achievements of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the United States. This month-long celebration encompasses a wide range of activities, educational programs, and public events aimed at highlighting the significant role that the AAPI community has played in shaping the social, cultural, and economic fabric of the United States.

The choice of May for AAPI Heritage Month is significant for two historical reasons: it commemorates the arrival of the first Japanese immigrants to the United States on May 7, 1843, and it also marks the completion of the transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869. The latter event is particularly noteworthy because the railroad was largely built by Chinese laborers who faced immense hardships and discrimination during and after its construction.

AAPI Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the diverse cultures and traditions of the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, acknowledge our challenges and contributions, and foster a greater understanding and appreciation for our rich heritage within the broader American mosaic.
